DESIGN SKILLS TO LEARN

  • drawing inspiration from historical artwork: “American Progress” 1872
  • watercolor landscape painting with white paint and color pencil layer
  • using mixed medium: applying imagery from historical artwork

MATERIALS [SEE ART TOOLS IN MENU FOR DETAILS + LINKS]

  • watercolor sketchbook or watercolor paper
  • watercolor paint palette
  • wide and thin paint brushes
  • white paint [acrylic or tempera]
  • color pencils
  • printer paper and glue stick or sticker label sheets to print on [optional]
  • print out map and historical images [attached below]
  • scissors

STEP NO.1

  • video for the inspiration behind our page [historical artwork: “American Progress” 1872]

STEP NO.2

  • print out west coast maps [attached below] on a sticker label or paper
  • cut out maps
  • adhere to left side of the watercolor paper

STEP NO.3

  • follow video to watercolor landscape painting

STEP NO.4

  • print out manifest destiny imagery [attached below] on a sticker label or paper
  • follow video for finishing touches

STEP NO.5

  • write history sentence
