DESIGN SKILLS TO LEARN
- making a flap book page
- using gelatos (if you don’t have gelatos watercolor will work fine as a substitute)
MATERIALS: (SEE ART TOOLS IN MENU FOR DETAILS + LINKS)
- sketchbook or three sheets of watercolor paper
- large and medium size bowls that will fit on your sketchbook page
- pencil
- 3 x 5 cards
- scissors
- gelatos (other option: watercolor paint palette)
- wet wipes for gelatos
- watercolor color pencils (other option: basic color pencils)
- thin black felt tip pen

STEP NO.1
- trace a large bowl on your page with a pencil
- trace a smaller bowl inside of the large circle

STEP NO.2
- trace three rectangles all the way to the edge of your page using 3 x 5 cards as a template
- draw arrows over the double circle line and rectangles

STEP NO.3
- follow the demo below to paint your pages using gelatos and a wet wipe (use watercolor paint as a substitute for gelatos)
- follow the demo below to paint your arrow with gelatos and a brush

STEP NO.4
- cut two sides of your 3 x 5 rectangles to make your flip book
- trace the openings you created on the following page of your sketch book
- draw illustrations for producers, consumers, and decomposers on the second page (my little one used tutorials on you tube “art for kids hub” to help her with her drawings)
- use watercolor pencils or basic color pencils to apply color to your illustrations (see watercolor pencil demo below)
- be sure to paint past your rectangle to give yourself a little “wiggle room” for the next step

STEP NO.5
- assemble your flip book
- apply double face tape to back side of your top page …. you will want to place it on all the edges to really keep the pages together

STEP NO.5
- label your flip book
