


DESIGN SKILLS TO LEARN
- drawing elongated portraits inspired by the mannerist artist, el greco…. you will love drawing these long skinny guys with our friends, flint and grayson! this is flint’s specialty and a fun style to learn. i love how he applied his “long skinny men” style to king george and king edward III.
- using oil pastels ….. flint and grayson made a tutorial to teach us how to apply color to our long skinny men using oil pastels. (if you don’t have oil pastels color pencils will work too)
- making paper look aged
- drawing old english letters
- making a wax seal (optional)
MATERIALS: (SEE ART TOOLS IN MENU FOR DETAILS + LINKS)
- sketchbook or two sheets of watercolor paper
- pencil
- beige watercolor paint
- watercolor pencils or basic color pencils
- wide, flat paint brush
- two pieces of black paper cut to 5″x5″
- white color pencil
- oil pastels (other option: color pencils)
- scissors
- glue stick
- ruler
- black marker
- wax seal (optional)



STEP NO.1
- draw your scroll in pencil then trace it with a dark brown watercolor pencil (other option: basic color pencil)
- draw and color in the “tear” marks and lines
- get out your beige watercolor and a wide flat brush then follow the demo below
- paint a gray shadow line under the roll and on the sides of the roll using a gray water color pencil
- paint the ribbon black using a black watercolor pencil





STEP NO.2
- grab your 5″ x 5″ black paper and white color pencil
- follow flint and grayson’s tutorial to draw an el greco inspired king edward III
STEP NO.3
- apply color to your portrait
- grab your oil pastels (other option: basic color pencils) and follow flint and grayson’s tutorial

STEP NO.4
- take what you’ve learned from flint and grayson’s tutorials, draw, and apply color to your own elongated king john







flint and grayson’s finished projects! grayson had a little help from her two year old sister, indie! she climbed up and added a little bit of her own art to grayson’s project…. grayson just smiled and remarked “I guess we need to add indie’s name to this page!” what a sweet sister!!!!
STEP NO.5
- cut the sides of your portraits to make them rectangles
- with a glue stick adhere your portraits to your painted and dried scroll
- draw a frame around your portraits using a marker and a ruler
- write your history sentence (note: our sketchbooks do not have the history sentence in it’s entirety)
- try using old english letters

STEP NO.6
- add a wax seal : king john was forced by the nobles to set his royal seal to the magna carta (another option is to draw and color a wax seal with a watercolor pencil)
