materials

  • watercolor sketchbook or watercolor paper
  • blue.black.white tempera paint or any basic poster paint
  • large paintbrushes
  • pages from a book or newspaper
  • black felt tip marker or pen
  • glue stick

step no.1

  • divide sketchbook into 5 parts with thermosphere as the largest section
  • paint layers from black at the top to a light gray blue on the bottom. We really enjoyed mixing these colors and seeing all the beauty that came from simply mixing blue, black, and white. have fun!

STEP NO.2

  • DRAW!
  • we drew on book pages. i purchased the 1911 edition of the boy scout handbook for the purpose of tearing apart for art and design. I like most of the illustrations and the text. it’s $4.71 on amazon. newspaper, trader joes flyers, etc… are great too.
  • we are excited to welcome our first guest artist to give a tutorial! our friend, emmett put together an excellent tutorial on how to draw a space shuttle. get your rulers ready!
  • we used art for kids hub to help us with our astronaut and airplane
  • outline your pencil drawings in thin felt tip marker or pen.

STEP NO.3

  • cut out drawings
  • label layers of the atmosphere and add other detailed information
  • use glue stick to adhere
